Honest-to-goodness temp this morning. And today isn’t even the coldest day this week!

Understandably, the weather plays a huge role in Farmer’s and Rancher’s days. It dictates what the priorities will be for the day – check the water and break ice? Or make sure they are up early enough to be done before the heat of the day becomes unbearable. As such, it is not a surprise to know that The Weather Channel is many agricultural men’s favorite TV channel and phone app.

Curtis especially loves to tune in every morning, not so much to see what his day is going to bring but, rather, to see if, possibly, our area may have finally made it on the show. Much like playing the lottery, the odds of our little corner of Montana hitting national news are pretty high- I would guess 1,000,000 to 1?

When the weather report comes on, he stops what he is doing mid air, mid sentence, or mid bite to watch with full, unfettered attention throughout the entire report with high hopes that NE Montana will be highlighted. It is without fail that at the end of the report, Curtis mutters something like, “not even an honorable mention.”

I have not decided what theory to go with. My population theory, in which the entire 1300 people of our county are just a blip on the map compared to the millions of people affected elsewhere. Or, there is the ‘that’s just the way it is there’ theory, in which our weather, like Alaska, is expected to be cold this time of year, so why in the heck would they waste precious news time to tell people about it? “Snowy again in Alaska….” is very similar to “70 degrees today in San Diego.” Yeah, yeah, we get it.

Nevertheless, one of my favorite times of day has become Weather Report time, of course not because of the breath-taking news report but I am waiting to see what Curtis will do if we do happen to make the news and hit the weather station lottery! I hope I have my phone close so I can record his response for you!

In the meantime, stay warm out there. It’s a bit chilly for us this morning but tonight is expected to be about 12 degrees cooler! Brrrrrr….

And thank you to every rancher out there who piles on as many layers as they can and still move to brave the cold no matter how many weather watches are issued to make sure the livestock are fed and safe. You have my never ending appreciation!
