Monday I was lucky enough to have the day off so I could trail our pairs home from a pasture about 7 miles away. At this time of year, historically the calves will be weaned from their mothers who should already be pregnant with their next calf. Then the steer calves (neutered males) get sent to their new home.
It was a beautiful morning – about 40 degrees and the sun shining after the fog burnt off. We parked the pickup and trailer near the pasture, unloaded our horses and off we went.
My first mistake was getting a concept in my head that we would push the cattle out of the pasture, onto the road and follow the road to our house. I saw the picture clear as a bell. This, my friends, is known as assumption. We ALL know what assumption means.
Just about the time we got the cows out of the pasture into a neighboring field, I spurred my trusty horse, Snort, into action moving her to block the cows from crossing the road. About that time I hear, “Tammi! Let them go into the field!”
“It would be nice if I know the plan too!” I yelled back.
Curtis chuckled and off we went, pushing the pairs through the field. When I had my chance, I asked Curtis what the plan was – just what direction were we headed?
“Plan?” He asked. “We don’t have a plan. We are just going to let the cows pick the direction.”
It was that precise moment that I decided to write a blog. So much to say and so many of you can relate. So welcome to Happy Ranch Wife. I really am a happy ranch wife and, despite the number of times I “roll my eyes” at my husband, I feel like he is my right arm or I am his, the anatomy of which is not 100% clear. At any rate, we are a team but one is left brained, one is right brained and the mix is always humorous!
Thank you for joining me. I look forward to hearing from you. Not exactly clear how this blog stuff works at this exact moment but we will find out together. I also have a Facebook page – Happy Ranch Wife @1happyranchwife, a page on Pinterest, and my email is happyranchwife@yahoo.com.
Here we go!
